When you visit Sparkling Hill, you’re not just living at a unique high-end resort; you’re visiting Vernon, British Columbia, a city of roughly 44,000 people and a popular tourist destination in its own right.
Even though Sparkling Hill offers an all-encompassing vacation getaway for pleasure seekers, activities are also abundant off the resort, and we encourage our guests to explore.
Here are some recommended spots to check out that will round out your Okanagan experience.
Kalavida Surf Shop on Kalamalka Lake
Do you want to know what’s SUP?
Standup paddle boarding (SUP) offers a relaxing way to squeeze in a low-impact whole-body workout while enjoying the great outdoors. It’s also an excuse to visit nearby Kalamalka Lake.
Located south of Vernon, Kalamalka Lake boasts one of Canada’s most tropical-looking bodies of water. Lucky for you the Kalavida Surf Shop is located right there. All are invited to browse for new surf ware, rent a board, take a lesson, and hit the lake with its striking turquoise appearance. Few can resist dipping in their toes for some form of water activity, and paddle boarding is a relaxing way to take in all the scenery.
Ratio Coffee & Pastry – Who doesn’t enjoy a coffee and pastry while strolling around a downtown setting? Explore the history of Vernon through the town’s collection of 28 colourful murals spread out across the city. We’re particularly fond of the art on the side of the Science Centre Building, which depicts the area’s most famous and least seen resident. Ogopogo is the world-famous lake monster said to inhabit Okanagan Lake. Canada’s answer to the Loch Ness monster is just one more element adding to the region’s mystique.
The Vernon Farmers Market – Can’t get enough of the fresh tastes of Sparkling Hill? You can purchase the area’s freshest produce direct from local growers at the Okanagan’s longest-running outdoor farmer’s market. A popular outing among tourists and locals alike, you’ll find a nice sampling of the region’s finest baked goods, fresh fruit, fresh cut flowers, and hand-crafted pottery from local vendors. The market is open for business from April to the end of October.
Davison Orchards – Still hungry? If you’re ready for a bit of the B.C. country farm experience, you’ll delight in the charming scenery and fresh-from-the-field flavours found here. Pet some livestock and get a tour of a working farm. You’ll want to top off your visit with a bite at the Farmhouse café. This on-site eatery features amazing lattes, homemade cuisine, and yummy pies for dessert.
Planet Bee – For a completely different farm experience, guests can walk amongst the gardens and countless honeybees at Planet Bee honey farm. It’s a unique opportunity to learn about making bottled honey and mead directly from the source. Shop a wide selection of beeswax candles and honey-infused skin and healthcare products. Discover the wonders of B.C. honey that is 100% raw, pure, and unpasteurized.
The Rise Golf Course – That massage you’ve booked at Sparkling Hill will feel like an absolute game-changer after a round at this stunning location. Situated high above Okanagan Lake, this gorgeous 18-hole course, designed by PGA golf legend Fred Couples, offers challenging play and incredible views at every twist and turn. Thankfully, you don’t have to be a pro to try it out, as the course welcomes golfers of all skill levels.
Mountain Biking – If you love mountain biking, or you’re curious to see why people love it so much, then a trail ride around Vernon is a can’t miss opportunity. Take on the Okanagan Rail Trail with Dialed Rides for some of the best biking in B.C.! Dialed Rides offers coaching (if requested) and 2-hour guided tours. Sparkling Hill guests qualify for a 10% discount when you present your reservation number at the time of booking.
Winery Tours with Skylux Helicopters – The Okanagan has so many quality wineries that squeezing them all in during a single vacation would be tough. But, for those die-hard wine connoisseurs and adventurers wanting to sample as many as possible, we suggest a call to Skylux Helicopters. Why settle for a designated driver when you can have your own experienced pilot and luxury helicopter. With comfortable leather seating, air conditioning, and extra space for your purchases, you’ll be able to travel in style while taking in the stunning aerial views.
Polson Park – Vernon locals seeking a tranquil setting for a stroll, a picnic, or outdoor recreation (running track, tennis courts, etc.) visit Polson Park. Located near the heart of the city, some of the park’s standout features include the floral clock (reset daily with the correct date), Japanese garden, Chinese pagoda picnic shelter, rose garden, and duck pond.
